Finding Your Style Through Faith: Modesty, Fashion, and Identity in Christ

Has anyone else experienced the kind of transformation I did when I became a new creation in Christ? Were you surprised when you started finding your style through faith?

As I surrendered my life to Him, God began revealing areas that needed change—and to my surprise, my wardrobe was one of them.

I remember going through my closet, piece by piece, with my heavenly Father by my side. Many items I felt convicted to get rid of—especially those that were too low-cut or short, their lack of modesty suddenly repulsing me.

As I reflected on this, I was reminded of 1 Peter 3:3-4, which says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment…Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

This verse helped me see that it wasn’t just about what I wore but the spirit with which I approached my clothing choices. I had to question why I had chose the clothes I did.

Some things I needed to get rid of were modest, yet I still felt the need to part with them. I couldn’t explain why, but I was determined to let go of anything that didn’t seem pleasing to God.

What was once a full closet now looked bare.

I knew I would need more clothes, but a deeper question hit me: Who am I now, and how do I dress this new me? I had died to my old self—how do you rediscover yourself after that?

All I knew was I was on fire for the Lord, so I bought the most old-lady-looking clothes that covered me from head to toe. I just wanted to make God happy about my choices.

But over time, I learned something beautiful—God created me, including my personality. 1 Samuel 16:7 teaches us that, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

This verse reassured me that God cared more about my heart posture than the specific clothes I wore.

He delighted in my uniqueness and my choices, so long as I was choosing with the right heart and attitude, and not to garner validation.

I still struggled with finding my style. And during those early months, I did something that might seem too spiritual to some—but it felt right to me.

I would go into my closet and ask God to help me pick an outfit for the day. I’d always reach for something unexpected, something I wouldn’t normally choose, and end up loving it.

Through this, God was teaching me to trust Him, even in the little things.

After months of wrestling with my sense of style, I realized this journey was about more than just clothing.

I had spent so much of my life following trends that I didn’t know what I truly liked.

I never felt like I fit into a specific box, and my insecurities always pushed me to chase what was “in style” just to feel like I belonged somewhere.

God was calling my attention to my heart posture regarding what I wore and revealing how my need to follow the crowd had eroded my sense of identity.

I still believed God expected modesty from me. However, I now realize the trends I was following were set by a lost and broken world that seeks validation for every inch of skin shown.

My heart breaks that the world defines beauty in a way that exposes our brokenness rather than our value.

I wanted to share my personal journey finding my style in hopes to prompt others to think about their relationship with their clothing.

Take a moment to reflect on your own wardrobe and the way it reflects your heart and identity in Christ. Ask yourself: Am I dressing to follow trends or to express the unique person God has created me to be?

Spend some time in prayer, inviting God to guide you in how you can align your outward expression with your inward transformation.

Fashion and faith don’t have to be at odds. It’s not about setting rigid rules but about seeking God’s guidance in expressing the unique person He made you to be—inside and out.

Explore Your Unique Style While Honoring God

Here are a few gentle steps I still use to check my heart regarding my wardrobe as my style is always evolving:

  1. Pray before you shop. Invite God into your shopping trips and ask Him to help you make choices that reflect your identity in Christ. You might be surprised at how He guides you to pieces that make you feel confident and true to yourself.
  2. Embrace your individuality. God didn’t create us to all look the same. Trust that the unique style you are drawn to can honor Him. Don’t be afraid to wear something that truly reflects your personality and values.
  3. Enjoy trends, but don’t let them define you. Trends can be fun and a great way to express creativity, but remember that your identity comes from Christ, not from keeping up with the latest styles. Choose trends that make you feel good and reflect your values, rather than following them for validation. 4. Seek modesty, but don’t fear creativity. Dressing modestly doesn’t mean you have to give up your sense of style. God delights in your creativity, so explore ways to honor Him while expressing who you are.
  5. Let your wardrobe reflect your heart. Think of your clothing choices as an extension of your heart posture. Are you dressing to please the world, or to express your love for God and the person He created you to be?
